DURHAM, NC, March 10, 2014âDr. Jean Rhodes, director of the University of Massachusetts Boston Center for Evidence-Based Mentoring, will deliver a keynote address at the 2014 International Mentoring Congress organized by Team MentorProgramme Friesland.
The conference will take place on Thursday, March 20, in Heerenveen, The Netherlands. It is expected to draw more than 200 participants from the Netherlands and 15 other European countries who are interested in developing and enhancing mentoring programs for youth, as a cooperation between industry and education.
Dr. Rhodes, one of two featured speakers, will present on âConnecting Across Generation: The New Science of Mentoring Relationships.â During this session, Dr. Rhodes will provide an overview of the most recent research on youth mentoring and make recommendations to programs that are just starting to implement mentoring models.
Dr. Rhodes completed her Ph.D. in clinical psychology at DePaul University and her clinical internship at the University Of Chicago School of Medicine. She is the Frank L. Boyden Professor in the Department of Psychology at UMass Boston and the most prolific and collaborative youth mentoring researcher in the world. She is the author of the popular book, âStand by me: The risks and rewards of mentoring of todayâs youthâ and has published more than 100 scientific articles.
During the conference, Dr. Rhodes and staff from the Center for Evidence-Based Mentoring will demonstrate and display Mentoring Centralâs three web-based youth mentor training courses. Building the Foundation, developed by Drs. Janis Kupersmidt, Rebecca Stelter, and Rhodes, is a six-lesson, research-based course that provides the foundation for an effective mentoring relationship.
The other courses, Ethics & Safety and Building & Maintaining the Relationship supplement the pre-match information and skills that for the core of Building the Foundation. Ethics & Safety is a six-session interactive course that prepares mentors for how to solve common ethical and safety issues, ensuring healthier, more confident decision-making skills. Building & Maintaining the Relationship provides mentors with ideas and strategies to help them form relationships that are stronger and last longer.
